Evaluating an International Employment Opportunity
Moving abroad for employment represents a significant life decision requiring rigorous evaluation of working conditions, legal protections, living standards, and net financial earnings. In alignment with §4.5 of our operational guidelines, SkyRoute Global provides objective, factual guidance to empower candidates in making informed choices before accepting any international offer.
Regardless of destination country, every legitimate overseas placement must fulfill foundational statutory criteria: an authenticated employment visa, a bilateral contract approved by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, clear wage entitlements, and employer-sponsored medical insurance.
1. Work Permits and Visa Legality
The single most critical safeguard in foreign employment is verifying that your entry visa is an authorized employment work permit issued in your name by the destination country's immigration ministry.
- Never travel on a tourist or visit visa: Legitimate overseas employers will never ask candidates to arrive on tourist, visit, or transit visas with promises of conversion upon arrival. Working on a visit visa is illegal in virtually all jurisdictions and leaves workers vulnerable to exploitation and deportation.
- Verify visa authenticity: Genuine work visas can be verified directly on official governmental immigration portals using your visa application number and passport details prior to departure.
- SLBFE Endorsement: Prior to leaving Sri Lanka, your visa and contract must be formally registered and stamped by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment at their head office or the international airport desk.
2. Comprehensive Employment Contract Review
Before signing an agreement or submitting your travel documents, carefully review every clause in your formal employment offer. A valid international contract must explicitly state:
Basic Salary & Allowances
The basic monthly wage in destination currency, fixed food allowance, overtime rates, and payment schedule dates.
Working Hours & Rest Days
Standard working hours per week (typically 48 hours), mandatory weekly rest days, and statutory public holiday entitlements.
Accommodation & Transport
Confirmation of employer-provided furnished lodging and work-site transportation, or clear housing allowance provisions.
Repatriation & Leave
Provision of return airfare upon completion of the contractual tenure, paid annual leave days, and emergency repatriation terms.
3. Essential Questions to Clarify Before Accepting
We advise every applicant to ask the following questions during interview and contract briefing sessions:
- What is the exact company name and physical workplace address where I will be stationed?
- Does the company directly employ me, or will I be subcontracted to a third-party client?
- What are the local deductions (taxes, social insurance, or uniform costs) if any, and what is the net take-home pay?
- What health and emergency insurance covers me during working hours and off-duty hours?
- Where is the nearest Sri Lankan Embassy or Consulate in the destination country, and what are their labor welfare hotline numbers?
